Black Hills Estate Winery - A Masterful Reset
Black Hills Estate has a storied history as one of the oldest and leading estates in South Okanagan. Its annual release of Black Hills became a Canadian phenomenon, selling out year after year within hours, similar to what was happening with California's wines. The winery continues to lead the way as it prepares to reset its vineyards in the wake of the devastating freeze that wreaked havoc across the Okanagan. This time, the emphasis is on the future of Black Hills and is more vineyard-focused than anyone wine. To that end, Ross Wise is a native New Zealander with a Bachelor of Viticulture and an Advanced Diploma in Wine Science from the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hawkes Bay. Ross has worked in winemaking, viticulture, and consulting roles across the wine regions of New Zealand and Canada. He is the General Manager and Winemaker at Black Hills Estate Winery in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley and one of a rare group who are a Master of Wine, a winemaker, and a viticulturist. The latter is something Wise has continued to nurture as the winery expands into organic and regenerative viticulture, given all the potential implications of climate change in the Okanagan Valley. We caught up with Ross, who was dealing with the aftermath of one of the severest cold snaps ever experienced in the Okanagan Valley, which would impact the valley vineyards for decades. Wise is implementing a multi-pronged approach to growing grapes, abandoning some, embracing others and changing the way Black Hills physically grow grapes to protect their vineyards down the road better. Thoughtful, ever humble and mindful of his customers, he explains how Black Hills is coping with the many changes they have and will face in the future.

Monte del Frà and Verona
Переглядів 892 місяці тому
Monte del Frà, or the land of the monks, earned its name in the late 15th century when the estate was founded as a monastery by friars from Santa Maria Della Scala. The friars grew their food to live off the land in perpetuity and made wine. Two centuries later, in 1958, Massimo Bonomo rented two rooms and the adjacent fields. His family opened a Frasca, a typical Venetian bulk wine shop. They ...

      @GismondiOnWine 5 місяців тому

      It wasn't scripted, actually. But I can see how it might look like that. We filmed this during the pandemic, so we were all a bit stiff from worry, and Anthony and I (the producer) drove from Vancouver to Kelowna when moving about the province was restricted to work or special circumstances. We try to keep things conversational, usually. I appreciate the feedback. We're always trying to improve.

    Loved this video and love Bartier Wines! I agree with Michael about several points, but for sure if I had to choose one varietal/wine that I would drink for the rest of my life, it would be Chardonnay. The other point is B.C. wines, and in particular Okanagan wines, do age well!

    Allot of these were Chianti at one point, before they came with DOCG...LIKE DOCG Brunello di Montalcino, patented to that towns styles. Its a region allot of the time too, where the viniards are. Like Chianti Classico is a zone. But therea fer example Chianti Colli Sienese, from the Siena hills. Better priced at times, but its at least 80% Sangiovese, comonality
